1. How fast can you pack?
It starts here... at the very beginning! Whilst I am looking at holiday quotes for my clients on a Tuesday afternoon around 2 pm.
A notification on a group chat within Experience It Now Travel. Offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a homeworker to take a cancelled place on the easyJet Holidays 2025 Malta FAM trip the next day. - Sounds great, right... Conditions? Of course there is, the trip is flying from London Southend Airport and I live some 250+ miles away and do not drive.
2. Train time
Without hesitation, I booked a 6-hour rail journey into the heart of London's Kings Cross station with Changes in York on my for my destination of London Southend Airport.
A smooth journey was experienced with minimal delays and timely connections thanks to the London Underground and various rail providers.
This was my first time using the 'Tube' and it was exciting yet nerve-wracking. I am so pleased it was a smooth journey.
3. Worthwhile journey?
Because my journey was last minute, I had packed all the essentials into a medium-sized case and 1 bag pack for my 5-day trip. I was bound to forget something right?
It's a good job I didn't. Next stop, London Southend Airport.
4. Meeting for the first time
Have you ever met someone for the first time and not been sure what to expect? I a little like a first date, but much less intimate? FAM trips are just like that... you never know who you are meeting or what to expect other than 1 thing... They are travel agents alike.
Before you know it, 4 AM hits, and you are barely awake, some just awaken from a short night's sleep in an airport hotel, and you meet for the first time.
Introductions to 12 like-minded travel enthusiasts, and your journey commences to another country.
5. Experiencing a new airport
It was a whole new experience for Kerrigan Travel to fly from London Southend Airport. It was a small but mighty fine airport, which was a great experience.
Short check-in queues with more agents than passengers, security was efficient and prompt, with the detectable seriousness you would expect in any London Airport.
There were departures of 3 flights, including Malta, all between 6 am and 7 am. You would never have thought so, given the calmness of the airport. Making this journey super smooth and enjoyable.
An enjoyable glass of Champagne was sipped whilst getting to know companion travellers, who they work for? Where are you from? How long have you been a travel agent? Have you been to Malta before? Are the questions flying around the table?
*Airport Announcement* - It's time to board, so soon and so promptly we were seated and ready for take off, away from the typically British wet and windy weather.
6. Seat 6F
With a flight time of 2 hours and 50 minutes, Malta was in reach after a pleasant flight with the middle seat spared. Plenty of leg room, great views and excellent service by the easyJet cabin crew and pilots.
A typical cheese toastie, Twix and a can of Coke serve as a light breakfast or in-flight snack.
See you on the island of Malta.
7. Welcome to Malta
Landing smoothly and safely onto Malta, we were building our excitement for the days ahead. An intense itinerary with lots of learning, experiencing and familiarising.
We had 4 full days of hotel visits, excursions and socialising planned by the easyJet Holidays team. Day one was a particular highlight.
Border control in Malta was efficient and effective, with our bags on the belt waiting for us. Departing the terminal to find the easyJet Holidays Representative to guide us to our transport.
A stylish mini-bus with needed air conditioning, though temperatures were a little low for the time of year. We were even treated to a traditional Maltese bus at the airport awaiting other guests. Pictured above.

We laughed and enjoyed each other's company with my very first Apperol Spritz... soooooo tasty!!
Shower and changed its time for evening meal in the wonderful Blue Elephent oriental restaraunt onsite at the Hilton Hotel.

14. Night Two
FAfter checking in at the hotel, we were greeted on the rooftop by the pool. The wind was unexpectedly wild for the season, but it added an element of adventure to the evening.
As any Brit would do abroad, we quickly sought out a local bar. Within minutes, we found a charming spot along the promenade, right on the beach, with breathtaking views over St. Paul’s Bay. We kicked off the evening with some creative cocktails themed around the "9 Lives of a Cat" – each one as unique as the last.
When dinner time rolled around, we were joined by the hotel manager for our 'Orange Party.' The dress code was simple: wear something orange.
With less than half a day's notice, I was caught unprepared and couldn't find anything orange in my wardrobe. But Malta came to the rescue! I found a vibrant orange top in a local store, and I proudly wore it throughout the evening, embracing the island's spirit.
After dinner, we headed to Café Del Mar for a cocktail, soaking in the tranquil ambience as we overlooked their private terrace pool and stunning sea views.
The night didn’t end there, as a small group of us ventured out to explore the local nightlife. It was an experience to remember.
One thing many might not know is that the legal drinking age in Malta is 17, which meant the clubs were buzzing with younger travellers. It quickly became clear that we were more than ready to call it a night. After all, we had work to do the next day, and we decided to rest up for another day of adventure.

Valletta, the capital of Malta, is a city steeped in history and culture. Walking through its narrow streets, one can marvel at the magnificent St. Paul’s Cathedral, an iconic symbol of the island’s rich religious heritage.
The Maltese Knights, who once ruled the island, left a lasting legacy that can be seen in the grand fortifications and historic buildings that line the streets. After a day of exploring, I indulged in a memorable lunch at 59 Republic, a Michelin-rated gem.

19. Night Three - One for the history books
After a long day of exploring the island and indulging in some exemplary food, the last thing on our minds was another elaborate five-course meal followed by a night of drinking and socialising. We were all in agreement: buffet and bed were the way to go. But as often happens, plans change.
Upon arriving at the buffet, the hotel managers surprised us with an invitation to their à la carte restaurant at the Riviera Spa & Resort.
As I settled into my seat, I noticed a peculiar man across the table. Not peculiar by nature, but by the distance between us. He introduced himself as "Bepe"—a friendly and outgoing chap with more stories than an entire library. And then came the surprise: Bepe was the owner of the hotel.
From humble beginnings as a waiter and housekeeper, Bepe shared his inspiring journey with us. His stories were filled with passion and wisdom, and he made for an incredible host. Over several hours, we enjoyed five courses of exceptional food and drinks, all while listening to Bepe’s vision for the future of the Riviera Resort and Spa. His enthusiasm for the hotel’s improvements and renovations was contagious.
The meal itself was nothing short of spectacular. We started with a comforting pumpkin and potato soup, followed by a rich risotto. The main course of red snapper was perfectly cooked, and for dessert, we were treated to the most delicious pastry I’ve ever had. Honestly, I don’t know how we managed to fit it all in after such a Michelin-rated lunch!
The evening went by quickly, and what had started as a quiet night turned into a memorable experience—one for the history books.

22. Final afternoon
At the end of our hotel tours and Malta experiences, this was my view by the pool as I spent time sunbathing with the other travel agents. We enjoyed cocktails and a dip into the water. The pool area was quiet, with drinks by the glass served by the hotel staff. I spent some time in the small pool talking to Tracey who was educating me on all her travelling experiences and family. She was great to listen to and learn lots of things from. We shared experiences and enjoyed soaking the sun together. I had a couple of Mango daiquiris, and it was time to dress for one last supper.
23. One Last Meal
The 'last supper', so it was nicknamed, and it was food fit for a king or queen alike.
A plentiful buffet with fresh charcuterie, soups, sushi, curries, pasta and fresh desserts and cakes. No one could walk away hungry from the buffet. We enjoyed wine, food and good company before heading on a short walk into St Julians to soak in the nightlife, It was hustling and bustling on the streets with traders' shops open until late.
Time to purchase some gifts and stop for a drink on the seafront. Pictured one last cocktail together before bed.
24. Home Time
Wrapping up such a memorable trip, we were picked up by our transfer at 9.45 am and at the airport within half an hour. Check-in was quiet and smooth, and security. Duty-free was roamed, but purchases remained few as I had a much longer onward journey from London Southend airport.
On Landing at the airport following a comfortable flight with easyJet. Our bags were on the belt before we had passed border control. This led to being on the ground and land side with luggage in less than 20 minutes, a phenomenal airport experience if you ask me.
We said our goodbyes, shared contact details and went our separate ways. A group of us shared the same train towards London. On the day of the 2025 London Marathon, whilst busy in central London, the trains were moderate on a nice 5-hour return rail journey back to Scarborough
Malta was never a destination I imagined myself visiting, yet now, I find myself already planning my return trip. From the moment I stepped foot on this enchanting island, I was captivated by its charm and hospitality. I spent my time immersed in the island’s stunning views, indulging in delicious food, and staying at incredible hotels—each contributing to an unforgettable experience. The local people, with their warmth and welcoming nature, truly made this journey one to remember. It’s easy to recommend a place based on research, but nothing compares to experiencing it firsthand. Thanks to the exceptional service and hospitality of the hotels and local suppliers, I now understand why Malta is such a hidden gem. The island has left its mark on me, and I can’t wait to return. Now, it’s your turn to explore what Malta has to offer.
